Practicing the alphabet is a simple task that can be done in so many ways. Of course singing the alphabet song is a favorite, but adding in additional activities like letter matching, or I spy, is an awesome way to begin letter and word recognition at an early age. Below you will find a few of our favorite activities we use to encourage learning letters, numbers, and simple words with our children! I’ve also attached some useful PDF files to help keep the learning fun. The only thing you will need is a set of magnetic letters and numbers. We also have this Alphabet set and mat and use both regularly.
The Alphabet Song - Of course we still sing the alphabet several times a day, but we mix it up by pointing to the letters while we sing! This helps the child associate the sound of the letter with its appearance. We use the magnetic letters or the letter mat linked above!
Letter Matching - This task is self explanatory. Using the magnetic letters and the Easy as ABC PDF, simply have your child match the magnets to the letters and numbers on the page. This can be done on the fridge or even set up on a cookie sheet for easy travel!
I Spy - The next activity involves using books to identify letters and words. You can have your child search for certain letters on the page, or search for images beginning with certain letters. Turn it into a game by incorporating I Spy! “I spy a word beginning with the letter A”. Have them find the word, read the word together!
Letter Sorting and Word Recognition - Using your magnetic letters and the simple word PDF’s attached, have your child identify the item on each page. Next, match the letters to the words. Announce the letters allowed and read the word together. Make it fun by including animal noises and pretending to be the animals! Before you know it, they will be reading and writing. I’ve also included a site word document to incorporate as your child progresses! The best thing? All of these documents can easily be created at home!
