Outdoor Scavenger Hunt

If you are anything like our family, you live for the warm weather. These last few spring-like days had us thrilled to be able to spend some extra time outside without puffy jackets! I decided to come up with a quick activity to encourage some outdoor learning. Scroll down to see how a simple activity can result in some major educational value. I've even attached a PDF for you to use during your next outdoor scavenger hunt!

Supplies Needed:
Paper
Crayons or markers
Step 1- Get those babies involved! Ask them which colors they would like to search for while outside. While talking, have them color a section of the paper using each crayon they have chosen. Discuss the items they might find while outside!
Step 2 - Head outside and have some fun! Let your children take their time, and explore. Find objects that coordinate with the colors on the paper. This step shouldn't be rushed. As a bonus, if you participate in the 1000 hours outside challenge, this helps rack up your time!
It's okay if the items don't match each shade perfectly. We had to settle for some weeds that resembled purple, and I couldn't believe we were able to find a dandelion in the middle of February!

Step 3 - Place all of your items on your paper, and review everything together! Talk about what you found, where you found it, and the traits that are associated with each item. Introduce new adjectives and show them the meaning of each one!
Step 4 - Dive a little deeper, and review the 5 senses of each item; look, touch, smell, listen, and taste (when safe)!
Already out and about and don't have access to paper and crayons? No worries! Below, you will find a PDF I have created to help you enjoy outside time with your little one!
